Why Donate to Build a Masjid? A Lasting Investment in Faith and Community
There are many worthwhile causes a Muslim can support.
Some provide help for a moment. Others can continue benefiting people for years to come.
Helping establish a masjid belongs to a special category because the impact does not end when the donation is made.
A masjid can become a place where Salah is established every day, the Qur'an is taught, children develop their faith, families gather, young Muslims find community, and people continue benefiting long after the original donors are gone.
That is why many Muslims choose to donate to build a masjid as part of their charitable giving.
For Ar-Rahma Masjid, that opportunity is connected to a real property in Northeast Calgary that the community is currently working to secure as a permanent Islamic centre. Rahma Masjid
Why Is Building a Masjid So Significant in Islam?
The importance of helping establish a masjid is clearly reflected in the Sunnah.
'Uthman ibn 'Affan رضي الله عنه reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“He who built a mosque for Allah, Allah would build a house for him like it in Paradise.”
This narration is recorded in Sahih Muslim 533b. Sunnah
The hadith gives Muslims a powerful reason to support the establishment of places dedicated to the worship of Allah.
But the meaning of that contribution becomes even clearer when we think about what happens inside a masjid after it opens.
One donation may help create a place where thousands of prayers are eventually performed.
A classroom may be used to teach Qur'an year after year.
Children who learn there may eventually bring their own children.
A young Muslim may find guidance or friendship there.
A family may find a community they remain connected to for decades.
The original contribution may have been made once, while the benefit continues.
What Is Sadaqah Jariyah?
Sadaqah Jariyah is commonly understood as ongoing or recurring charity: something that continues providing benefit after the initial act of giving.
The Prophet ﷺ said that when a person dies, their deeds come to an end except for three, including ongoing charity and beneficial knowledge. The narration is recorded in Sahih Muslim 1631. Sunnah
Supporting a beneficial masjid can therefore have the characteristics of ongoing charity when the facility continues enabling worship, education and service.
A donor should still give sincerely for the sake of Allah rather than treating charity like a guaranteed transaction. But the possibility of creating benefit that continues beyond one's lifetime is one of the reasons Muslims value lasting charitable projects.
One Contribution Can Support Many Forms of Good
When someone hears the words “donate to build a masjid,” it can sound as though the contribution is simply paying for walls, flooring or a building.
The deeper impact is what those physical spaces make possible.
At Ar-Rahma Masjid, the future vision includes a permanent space for daily Salah and Friday prayer, Qur'an and Islamic education, youth, sisters and families, community gatherings, early learning opportunities, family support, outreach and other forms of community service. These are future intended uses as the property is secured and developed. Rahma Masjid
A contribution toward the masjid can therefore become part of the foundation supporting all of those activities.
A place for Salah
The most fundamental purpose remains worship.
A permanent masjid creates a place where Muslims can gather throughout the week to remember Allah and stand together in prayer.
A place for Qur'an and knowledge
A masjid can also become a centre of learning.
Children can learn Qur'an.
Adults can continue Islamic education.
Young Muslims can ask questions and deepen their understanding.
Knowledge can move from one generation to another.
A place for the next generation
Children and youth need more than occasional exposure to Islam.
They benefit from environments in which Muslim identity, worship, learning and community are normal parts of life.
Ar-Rahma's future vision specifically includes Qur'an education and youth programming designed to help younger Muslims learn, connect and grow. Rahma Masjid
A place for families and community
A strong masjid can create relationships that extend beyond the prayer hall.
Families meet one another.
Sisters can learn and participate.
New Muslims can find community.
Volunteers can serve.
People can come together during Ramadan, educational events and community initiatives.
Over time, those relationships can turn a building into a genuine community institution.
Help Secure a Permanent Home for Ar-Rahma Masjid
Ar-Rahma Masjid is currently working toward securing its proposed property at 3125 Catalina Boulevard N.E. in Monterey Park, Northeast Calgary.
The approximately 1.5-acre site contains an existing building of approximately 5,500 square feet, with 40+ on-site parking spaces and rooms that could be adapted over time for worship, education and community use. Rahma Masjid
Your contribution can help move this vision closer to becoming a permanent home.
Why Small Donations Still Matter
A common fundraising problem is that someone sees the total project cost and thinks:
“My $20 or $50 isn't going to change anything.”
That conclusion is wrong.
Ar-Rahma's current fundraising campaign is built around 720 equivalent Musalla sponsorships at $1,000 each, creating a $720,000 campaign goal. But supporters do not have to contribute the full $1,000.
The campaign explicitly allows people to contribute $20, $100, $1,000 or another amount according to their ability, with smaller contributions combining toward the next Musalla. Rahma Masjid
The Musalla campaign is therefore not about 720 people each being responsible for $1,000.
It is about a community collectively funding the project.
Twenty people contributing $50 creates $1,000.
Ten people contributing $100 creates $1,000.
One person may sponsor a full Musalla.
Another may contribute what they can today and give again later.
The project moves forward when people stop asking whether their contribution is “big enough” and instead participate according to their ability.

Giving Is Not Only for Wealthy Donors
Allah says in Surah Al-Baqarah:
“The example of those who spend their wealth in the cause of Allah is that of a grain that sprouts into seven ears…”
Qur'an 2:261 continues by describing Allah multiplying the reward for whom He wills.
The lesson should not be reduced to a mathematical promise about a specific donation.
Rather, the verse reminds believers that sincere spending for the sake of Allah can carry significance far beyond what appears visible at the moment of giving.
For one person, a meaningful contribution may be $20.
For another, it may be $100.
Someone else may be able to sponsor an entire Musalla or make a larger contribution.
The amount is different.
The opportunity to participate belongs to everyone.
Imagine Where Your Donation Could Be Felt
Imagine the property years from now, in sha Allah.
Fajr begins and worshippers enter the masjid.
Later that morning, children open their Qur'ans.
During the week, young Muslims gather to learn and connect.
A new Muslim enters uncertainly and is welcomed by the community.
Families meet during Ramadan.
Someone receives support during a difficult period.
Volunteers prepare a community initiative.
An elderly worshipper quietly finds their regular place in the prayer hall.
None of those moments exist because of a building alone.
They exist because people decided that establishing the building was worth supporting.
And many of those donors may never personally meet the people who eventually benefit.
That is one of the most meaningful aspects of ongoing charity.
Why Supporting a Real Property Matters
Ar-Rahma is not asking the community to contribute toward an undefined idea.
The proposed property already exists at 3125 Catalina Boulevard N.E.
The site includes an existing building, gathering areas, additional rooms, parking and land that Ar-Rahma plans to thoughtfully adapt over time if the acquisition is successfully completed. Rahma Masjid
That matters because donor trust should be built on transparency.
People should be able to understand:
-what they are contributing toward;
-where the property is;
-how the project intends to use it;
-what the fundraising goal is; and
-how they can participate.
The more clearly those questions are answered, the easier it becomes for the community to support the project with confidence.
Can I Donate on Behalf of Someone Else?
Many Muslims choose to give charity intending the reward for a parent, family member or someone who has passed away.
Ar-Rahma's donation page currently includes giving on behalf of someone else among its frequently asked questions. Rahma Masjid
For individual religious questions concerning intention, deceased relatives, vows, Zakat or other specific rulings, donors should consult a qualified scholar.
For ordinary contributions to the project, however, there are multiple ways to participate.

What If I Cannot Donate $1,000?
You do not need to sponsor an entire Musalla.
This is worth repeating because the $1,000 figure can unintentionally make smaller donors believe that the campaign is not meant for them.
Ar-Rahma specifically invites contributions of any amount.
You can:
contribute once;
-give consistently over time;
-sponsor a full Musalla if you are able;
-encourage family or friends to contribute;
-share the fundraising campaign; or
-support the project through other approved giving options.
Every person does not have the same financial capacity.
A community project should not require them to.
Be Part of What Happens Here
A donation toward Ar-Rahma Masjid is not only about acquiring property.
It is about helping create the conditions for something lasting.
A place where Salah can be established.
A place where Qur'an can be taught.
A place where young Muslims can grow.
A place where families can connect.
A place where the community can serve others.
And, by Allah's permission, a place that may continue benefiting people long after today's fundraising campaign has ended.
Ar-Rahma Masjid is currently working toward a $720,000 fundraising goal by October 30, 2026 to help secure its permanent future home. Rahma Masjid
You do not have to fund the entire project.
You only have to decide whether you want to become part of it.
